"text": "Basically, South Sudan recently broke off from (north) Sudan, having been battling for autonomy/equal rights/independence for decades. The second independence war was largely fought by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, whose armed wing was the Sudan People's Liberation Army. The SPLM/A was severely fractured along ethnic lines, with main branches being Nuer or Dinka dominated. These factions often fought each other just as much as they fought the north Sudanese. Since independence, the SPLM has been the ruling party in government, while the SPLA has been transformed into the national military. However, factions within the SPLA are still loyal to their mostly-ethnically-based leaders. The President, Salva Kiir, is Dinka, while the recently dismissed Vice President Riek Machar is Nuer. There is a lot of animosity towards Machar because he (for a time) received a lot of support from north Sudan in his fight against the mainstream SPLA. \n\nThis current conflict's origins are a bit muddied. Fighting has broken out between factions of the SPLA loyal to Kiir (the government, mostly Dinka) and those loyal to Machar (the rebels, mostly Nuer). Kiir is saying that Machar tried to stage a coup, but Machar is saying that Kiir tried to arrest all the various opposition figures. Kiir has been accused of being increasingly autocratic since he assumed the presidency. Other reports say that it originated as a drunken brawl that escalated because higher ranking officers took sides and refused to make peace.\n\nOverall, it's hard to say exactly what started this. But currently fighting has spread to at least half of South Sudan's provinces, and the rebels have taken multiple major cities. Overall, this is by far the biggest and most serious outbreak of violence since independence. Previous bouts of Dinka-Nuer fighting had erupted, but it was always on relatively small inter-clan scales. This is entirely different and the UN is already saying that thousands have died.",
