That's rarely how prison works. I've got some relatives who are CO's. The vast, overwhelming majority of violence is only ever about gangs and/or drugs (those circles almost entirely overlap), with the odd random beef over stupid stuff like opportunistic theft, or who's turn it is to play dominoes, etc.
This wasn't a political statement, revenge, or anything else except pure opportunism. Some of the more famous/infamous people will get targeted for sure, but even then, it's more about the assailant getting cred for it than it is about any kind of justice. They're not in there because they give a shit about justice, fairness, etc. The bangers are angry, violent, sociopathic people looking to take any advantage that presents itself, and that includes the two-for-one deal on stabbing someone for their own gratification, and then using that act to try and paint themselves as having some sort of moral code.
And that goes for the guys who prey on the sex offenders as well. I totally respect that society is happy to have them stabbed in prison, especially since it saves us having to deal with them. But you lock a guy up for murder, and then let him murder specific people throughout his run, that's not going to rehabilitate him. If he ever gets out, he'll do so with the knowledge that murder is fine as long as you can frame it the right way.
