If folks are wondering what conversations inside retail sound like, it's as myopic as you think, but their framing is interesting. Well it's useful to know.
Context: I'm a marketing analyst working for an agency and I'm assigned to a mid-market apparel brand.
After COVID, my brand went from strong promos a couple of times a month to wanting to "establish themselves as a performance brand". Another brand wanted to become a genuine luxury brand. Both attempts were resounding failures. My brand has moved to more promos than ever before, and the other brand kicked their CEO out and revenues are down very very severely year over year.
C-suites seem to forget that their shoppers may have other ideas as to what they want to buy vs the highly insular multimillionaire/ billionaire set. It's not malice but it is very stupid.
They all sound like Tommy Haverford shouting " exclusive, luxury, performance" at each other when the product ranges from average to pretty ok, and never had a reputation as a "luxury brand"
