I think it's equally convincing that more advanced species might maintain something akin to the Prime Directive & avoid interacting with primitive, superstitious races such as our own which might fire off a bunch of nukes & self-destruct at the news that we're not as special or as evolved as we think we are.

There are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the known universe, each with hundreds of billions of stars. We can't even fathom the distance to Alpha Centauri, much less the vastness of space which separates us from other potential life-harboring planets. Fermi needs to ouvri his mind a little. We have no idea what's out there, who might be looking up at the sky as we do, asking the exact same questions.
