Just wanna preface by saying that I am amazed at what we have and I'm very thankful to witness all this evolution.
However...
Not to sound like an obnoxious downer, but I feel that we may have to temper expectations of the upcoming release of the new conversational voice model. Since the announcement, I've been ridiculously excited, even to where, for the first time, I've been using the current voice model in app to acclimate to verbally using ChatGPT, but it's making me ask questions about what's to come.
First of all, while the demos look absolutely incredible, I think she will lack a natural, conversational flow because I'm doubting whether she can handle natural pauses - which is HUGE in human conversation. I'm realizing that when I talk to the current voice model, it actually stresses me out, and I'm frantically saying "Um, um, well, uuuh", and hurriedly trying to think of filler words to keep her engaged while I'm thinking of what to say next, to make it so that she doesn't cut me off and conclude what I've said and start on the next thing to say. Even with me frantically trying to concatenate what I'm saying without pause, sometimes it's still not enough and I take a split second too long and she just cuts me off, and I have to start a new prompt.
I can't see why the new model won't be the same. Multiple times during the demos, it was the same where they paused for a moment, and she started to speak over them.
Which brings me to my next concern: How will credit limits work for this? I'm already wasting credits on the current model, as she will cut me off mid-flow, and I'll have to use an extra credit to start a whole other prompt after being interrupted.
Unless they have made insane evolution in AI to where she's able to recognize pauses and intuit when the user is done talking, I don't see how this is going to be much different.
I think if I'm to be realistic, this is going to be the same ChatGPT we know, but with slightly less delay, some quirky new voice features, and a more realistic, mostly human-sounding way of speaking.
I think I got ahead of myself like it was Christmas or something, because, yes, it is so incredible what we have now, and I'm thankful, and I'm excited for the future, but I'm thinking that perhaps this isn't as revolutionary a step as a lot of us are thinking.
I think a lot of us are thinking we're gonna have a personal "Her", but actually, I think the reality might be that we have the same old ChatGPT, but with a quirky, polished new voice.
Right now, with the current voice model, I've switched from the live chat, to instead just using speech to text, and then just getting her to read aloud what she's written. That way, I don't have to face the issues of her cutting me off, and I feel less pressure.
I really do hope I'm wrong, and that the new model can sense when the user is done talking, and that there is an efficient way of dealing with the whole token/credit system.
While the demos look VERY impressive, if my predictions are accurate, I think they understandably displayed it in a way that was flattering to show off it's impressive capabilities, while maybe not displaying it's potential inability to gracefully manage pauses in human conversation. And dealing with these pauses are no small issue, because to me, it's quite literally the difference between having a natural, intuitive flow of conversation, or just feeling like you're talking to a machine.
I'd love to know all your thoughts. Please disprove me, haha.
