Jail and prison are different places, but they have the same people. Most people in prison are non violent offenders, just as most people in jail are non violent. However, prison is infinitely better than jail. Jails do not let you go outside and get sunshine. They do not allow television, and the only news they give you is a local rag once a week. Jails extort your family for vast amounts of money and do not let you have contact visits. Imagine being a state prisoner and not being allowed to hug your family for years. Only seeing and hearing them through glass and a telephone. Nowadays its just a screen so it's even worse. In prison they at least recognize that these people are going to be here for possibly their entire life so a few amenities are given. When I was in jail commissary was ridiculously expensive. A single pack of ramen noodles was 76 cents. It was 15 dollars for a 15 minute phone call. The only entertainment was books and your family could bring you books but they had to be donated to the jail in order for you to get them. In prison, you own your books. You can call your family for cheaper, but still expensive. You can watch television. You can have a radio. You can have a hotpot to actually cook your noodles that cost 24 cents a pack. Being sentenced to jail is torture compared to prison.
