Gas has it's value as an efficient way to store energy, and solar/wind is not yet an alternative.
The other benefit is that solar/wind do not produce energy reliably: they have peaks and troughs that sadly do not match demand peaks and troughs, which means that a, lot of energy is wasted and at the same time there's not enough energy made at certain hours. This is one of the main reasons we can't use renewables fully: there's just too much waste. But if we were able to convert CO2 into gas we could make all gas plants effective grid batteries: when there's surplus electricity gas plants use this technique to convert atmospheric CO2 into fuel, that they can then burn when the demand needs it. If a plant is able to work with only recaptures CO2 this way, the gas plant becomes neutral carbon emissions (which measure how much carbon you add to the air *that wasn't there before*, if all carbon burnt came from thin air and not the ground, then it all cancels out). If we had an efficient (in $/gal) way to recapture CO2 into fuel we could make our energy production carbon neutral across the country in less than a decade, moreover we could make our vehicle industry carbon neutral in less than a few years.
So let's not have perfect get in the way of better, especially when better means we stop increasing CO2 in the atmosphere and hit target goals at a speed that no renewable tech alone (even my recent hope of geothermal everywhere) could achieve.
