Or are people with violent tendencies drawn to violent media, regardless of the specific media? Enough people play violent games (myself included, for four decades and counting. I was in 4th grade when Mortal Kombat came out, and remember my parent flipping out over it. ) without ever displaying violent tendencies that ‘Video games cause violence’ simply doesn’t hold water.
I would argue that if the trope of ‘school shooter played Call of Duty all day’ took video games out of the equation, that person would be into something else violence-focused. Pick your trope: horror movies, r/watchpeopledie, Lovercraft obsession, bum fights, whatever. I don’t think games made them violent, nor drew out violence; I think they had violent tendencies that drew them to violent media, which happened to include video games.
