Many/most kids nowadays actually use gaming as a way to socialize. They're not just sitting in isolation, they are interacting with other kids, just virtually. They chat while playing, and then form bonds that continue outside the game(s) they play.

We live in Florida, and a couple of my daughter's best friends are in NYC and Oregon, and she met them through gaming.

We met up with the first one and her mom when we were in NYC a month or so ago. In spite of the differences in background/culture/geography/etc. that would be barriers to them even meeting each other, gaming brought them together and I think that's really cool.

I'm not suggesting that it's as good or better than being outside and meeting face to face, nor am I suggesting it's all sunshine and roses with all the scumbags and sickos out there, just that it's not the isolating activity people of my gen and older tend to think.
