It was a great night last night. It wasn't supposed to be festive necessarily but there was a lot of music and people doing political chalk art in the streets as well as a thumpin' electronic dance music truck that helped set the tone and a half dozen drum circles, a jazz band and some indigenous performers playing traditional flute music.
It wasn't a threatening environment but the size of the crowd shut down all traffic near the political heart of Taipei near the main train station sending a clear message to the KMT that their bullshit wasn't going to go unnoticed.
I asked my wife what she thought it accomplished and she said that for the more thuggish element of the KMT they would just ignore because thugs don't care what anybody thinks but that for the more moderate members it might make them think twice about supporting the radicals who want to go on political witch hunts and it's probably going to hurt the TPP (the relatively new third party) that has tried to split off the youth vote. Most of the people at yesterday's pro-DPP rally were young and energetic with a few drag queens, dance music etc. It made the DPP seem hip which is like making the Democrats seem hip --it's hard to pull off. The KMT handed this one to them with their heavy handed power play but the people of Taiwan made it happen.
