You dont need a degree in criminal justice to understand it, Budget Matt, because it is basic psychology.

A criminal, especially violent one, will not learn a lesson if their life in prison is great. A prison must be a place where it deprecates a person where depressive thoughts, mental agony starts, because only then will a person start to think about what they have done and how much did that cost not only to other person or their relatives but to the criminal themselves, they must realize how scary it is to be in prison, where no friends, girlfriends, boyfriends are present, no freedom to walk anywhere they want, they must understand that it wasnt worth it. Then and only then a person can start changing to a better side.

If you provide a criminal a life of luxury with free food, shelter, pretty much a freedom to make crimes further, because no one is going to complain, because they do not want to be labeled "snitches" and on top of that they get education and even electronic devices?How is that going to teach them anything? How will that person change change with time? Most wont. If you have a prison like that, how will it repel possible criminals from doing crimes? They will live with attitude like "well its fine, i will have so much stuff and even education" this attitude will not repel people from commiting a crime, people should look at prison like its one of the scariest places on earth: with no devices, no real education, limited food, because only then that scary prison will help repel people from comitting a crime and teach a lesson to current criminals.

It has nothing to do with "feeling warm and fuzzy" and it has everything to do with learning a lesson and at the same time, help repelling people from comitting a crime.
