American companies have exploited this labor for the past 3 decades to achieve massive profit margins. They still do, as American brands still operate there.

But regardless, have you seen an auto factory? You aren’t running an auto factory with labor camps, even in developing countries lmao. Almost everything is automated and most things are run by engineers. You can’t manufacture any significant number of autos with manual laborers, especially at the level of quality most autos are sold at today.

If you’re really concerned about the use of exploitative manual labor in China, you should be celebrating the slow shift up the value chain. The exploitative labor is moving to other developing countries like SEA and India. The less low-end manufacturing exists, the less use there is for manual labor, the less exploitation will exists.

To your second point, Tesla in China gets similar benefits as local manufacturers. That is, they get subsidies, labor, and do not need to partner up with a domestic automaker. They are also the ONLY serious competition with regards to US automakers. They are however, NOT Chinese state actors, nor are their biggest competitor, BYD. There are state actors, but they are not significant in the global scene as of yet.

You’re acting like subsidies are a new idea that China came up with to nefarious ends when they have existed in every industry in every country ever. The recipe of success was one pulled from Japan and the US they first developed new industries, this is not some new idea:

1. Subsidize locally and incentivize startups

2. Decrease subsidies and let them compete

3. The non competitive will fail and the rest will be globally competitive.

I don’t know why everyone thinks this is a secret evil idea. When China first started investing in solar in 2010, the news was already reporting this idea. It’s been known for multiple decades. Only now their investments are paying off do we have to act surprised and act like it’s an evil secret plan that they sprung on us last minute.
