IMO all traders and investors should be prepared for a market correction or crash at all times.
What this looks like will vary by each trader, but the idea of pulling money out of the market to sit on the sidelines or buying SPY puts can often be inefficient because no one can predict when such a drop may happen.
I talked with a trader who was so sure the market would crash in 2015 that they went to 100% cash. Not only did they lose out on one of the strongest bull markets of all time, but also had a very hard time trying to re-enter the market at the then elevated levels.
Those who buy puts for insurance lose that money when the market doesn't crash for long periods of time, and this becomes a drag on profits which over time may end up losing more than what might be lost in the actual crash.
Having a portfolio that is designed to weather a downturn is the key. This includes having some uninvested capital for "dry powder" to have flexibility and to take advantage when good stocks are on sale, and to trade good quality solid companies which can be held through any downturn and are likely to recover.
The market cannot be predicted or timed, so this is more like gambling if this is how anyone is investing . . .
