The very special thing about investment risk is that it doesn't appear until it does and it's generally pretty difficult to assess the risk exposure of a basket of investors until it appears. To make no mention of the fact that different types of risk exist.

You can have 5 investors all buying different things all getting variable rates of return. Maybe they all turn out fine, maybe 3 of the 5 under perform, with 1 getting absolutely killed by panic selling the bottom.

The only way you can experience true capital loss is buying a product that goes to 0 or selling the bottom. You can overpay for securities and various assets which increases your baseline risk exposure.

I keep about 15-20% of my portfolio in cash right now because it's returning 5% and that's pretty dang respectable, and I put the money I get monthly into expanding some favored positions.
