It's not a misnomer. We were calling things way, way dumber than this "AI" six decades ago, and nobody had any problem with that. We all knew that it didn't mean "this thing is as smart as a human". It just means "this thing can emulate some humanlike behaviors in some at least vaguely-convincing way".

Nobody (sane, at least) is saying current AI is as smart as a human, either. But it's clearly a hell of a lot closer than what we had ten years ago, and if it doesn't deserve the label AI then the term is simply useless because it doesn't apply to anything.
