The problem is that we are also reliant on immigration to deal with our ageing population problem.

I seem to remember seeing that, here in the UK at least, we need somewhere between 2-3 working age people to support 1 retiree (and that's bare minimum, 4+ is a healthy number). Well, when we're having 2 kids per couple, or 1 kid per retiree, we have to make up the shortfall, if we don't, we either have to tax the young to death or abolish retirement, and frankly, both of those ideas are less popular than migration filling the gaps
