“Extreme travel” is pure self-involved wankery IMO, as is making travel some kind of competitive checklist where you “do” this country and that one, gotta catch ‘em all! But there genuinely is a world of difference between pre-Ukraine-war Russia and “extreme” destinations. It wasn’t a dangerous place at all, comparatively. It still isn’t, when compared to active war zones and failed states like Haiti.
