I went on a Haitian "outreach" trip back in 2015 that had pulled back their Christian emphasis as their focus was more on medical aid. They would switch between general medical trips and surgical trips and we were on a general medical trip (high caloric gel packets, dewormer, dental etc). We hiked into the mountains to a church the locals had built to accommodate the trips as they were very extremely grateful for the extra help. The locals in the mountains were extremely malnourished and often resorted to "dirt cakes" (i believe it was flour or butter + mud) when they had nothing else, resulting in worms. Tent cities were also still all over the place resulting from the earthquakes 5 years prior.

It was unbelievable how many miles people would travel for aid- like seeing a doctor but walking ten miles to make it happen. One guy was carried 7 miles on a door by his friends but his leg was so far gone it needed to be flagged for the surgical trip to be amputated. In the middle of one of the nights our Haitian guides busted into the church declaring an emergency and the group (not my unknowledgeable ass) delivered a baby.

There were political uprisings in Montelais which prevented us from their usual travels. We also were aware that on a previous trip the dentist was shook down for a few hundred bucks at the airport. Additionally, one of their recent surgical trips had a Haitian guard killed and were robbed for their supplies. From what I'd heard, the Haitian government tracked down and killed the guys who robbed the team because they understood how important these types of aid trips were and didn't want to discourage the efforts.

I don't really have an opinion to express here. It's a dangerous country- even in the company of a well-versed group of regulars with connections and in relatively less turbulent times. It also was one of the most influential experiences I've ever had. I was young and naive to the dangers but many on the trip were old-timers that had been doing it for years (and continue to). While it's usually not the aim of these fighting factions to target the aid groups, they can get swept into the fray. The consequences will be felt.

Strangely enough, I was actually looking at the pictures and reminiscing today before this news broke.
