I grew up on the biggest council estate in Europe and saw insane levels of deprivation and poverty that you would've expected in a supposedly rich country and I've seen plenty of people go in and out of jail from my own age group. Plenty have become repeat offenders but I've seen enough that have bettered themselves. I aren't saying jail is a conveyor belt for people to turn into angels- my mate is a prison guard and deals with absolute shit on a day to day basis but I've seen enough people who grew up with fuck all go on to better themselves after given the support and guidance they lacked growing up.
