I had an uncle who was in an elite unit in the army, retired after 25 years, and then was an "independent contractor" in the 2000s. He once was offered a job doing security for oil fields in Africa (I'm intentionally being vague). The contract was for $400,000 for a year. He turned it down because he figured the only reason they were comfortable offering that much money would be if they thought he wouldn't be alive long enough to collect it.

If you do this type of job long enough, you can eventually tell which jobs are not worth the money. $100k for 3-4 months, for a supposedly safe job that seemingly has no background requirements, would certainly make me ask some questions.
