Saying that NATO as an organization would collapse if second-term Trump worked to undermine it is not anything close to the same thing as saying that Europe would collapse under a Russian invasion without American intervention.
Have you not watched the last 27 months unfold? Russia controls less than 20% of Ukraine’s territory after going up against a much smaller military heavily reliant on trickled-in, obsolete Western hand-me-downs, but Seven Days to the River Rhine is still going to happen? Please. It’s not the 1970s anymore. European militaries’ technological advantages over Russia are massive and decisive.
The consternation about the lack of artillery and ammunition production capacity is appropriate in regard to Ukraine, given the war that Ukraine is being forced to fight — that is, grinding attrition warfare supplemented by often-insufficient quantities of old Western tech regularly supplied far too late for maximum strategic effectiveness. It’s utterly misplaced when assessing NATO countries’ own warfare capacities, because grinding attrition warfare dominated by artillery and the need to defend against “meat assaults” is not the type of war NATO countries design their militaries to fight or would ever have to fight.
Russia has to fight this way, because they can’t even establish air superiority against Ukraine’s tiny air force and its ramshackle fleet of Soviet-era garbage. In 27 months, they’ve only managed air parity — against Ukraine! (Do you understand what a farce that is? It’s on the same level of absurdity as Russia’s Black Sea fleet getting its ass kicked by a country without a navy.) And Ukraine has to fight this way because NATO countries have been too afraid of an outright Russian defeat to help Ukraine establish air superiority — which they could easily have done by now, had the will existed, without donating a single fifth-generation fighter — or to provide them with old-tech long-range fires that would keep Russia from operating safely so relatively close to the front lines.
European NATO militaries would have instant air superiority over Russia. The nature of the fight would be completely different. Several individual European militaries could destroy a full-fledged Russian invasion force even if for some (nonexistent) reason required to act entirely alone.
