Honestly? I don't think it's even all that lofty or universal. I suspect it's literally just the internet scaring people every step of the way. The frightening/depressing things float to the top because they elicit the greatest reaction.
Dating? We hear all the nightmare stories, and the discouraging tales of unsuccessful people. Plus all the modern music which is disproportionately about how much chicks/dudes suck. Relationships? We hear about all the terrible ones, because bragging about the good ones would just be tacky. Pregnancy? We hear about all the most miserable cases, the complications, the tragedies. Child-rearing? Once again, if there's nothing worth complaining about, why post?
Yes, people will not have the sheer numbers of children they did in the past simply because there's no incentive to - but I think it's a combination of cost-of-living hikes in the first world, combined with this flood of widely-visible gripes and worst-case scenarios, that's pushed things over the line lately.
