Sounds like you don't have an emergency fund. If you and your wife both lost your jobs, how much would you need to set aside to float by for 6 months? (I'm way panicky, for me I would want to not worry about money for a year or more)

They have a pretty good flowchart for establishing an emergency fund, then getting 401K contributions, all the way to eventually having a taxable account.
