I did an undergrad research project which involved modifying some preexisting MCMC simulation for a 3D physical system. My adviser had me code Metropolis-Hastings from scratch, and then a simulation of a simple 1D toy model. Both very informative and probably saved me a lot of headaches versus jumping straight into the codebase for the 3D model!
