One book that really started the “tourist climber” phenomenon, was “Seven Summits” by Dick Bass and Richard Ridgeway. Bass was rich guy (oil money) who became caught up with being the first man to climb the highest peak on each continent (the “Seven Summits”). He had no climbing experience at the start, but he did have grit and determination and also had the resources to ally himself with some experienced climbers. He successfully finished the “quest” in like 1984 and published his story in the book in 1986. It is a compelling read that inspired a lot of “armchair explorers” to go out and realize their dreams.
