> There is a large difference between gaining power only by buying the coin vs. only by buying something else (in bitcoin's case, energy)

No there is literally no functional difference.

Well, other than adding a bunch of pollution, which is obviously a BAD thing in any quantity versus zero pollution. So yes, there's one difference, and it's unambiguously entirely in ETH's favor.

> continue to gain more and more power

The founders do not gain any more power over time. Your % of coins does not change by staking. Also true of ASICs, sorry I shouldn't have agreed to "gaining power" above, that was an oversight. You do gain tokens, but you do NOT gain power, in either case, because the rate of token gain exactly gets canceled out by the amoutn that the coin gets inflated by new supply, keeping you equally powerful as before. Equally not true of either coin, though, doesn't change any end conclusion.

* I have 10 coins today, you have 90 coins today.

* We each get a 10% stake reward. I now have 11 coins, you have 99 coins.

* 10/100 = 10%, and 11/110 = 10%. My share of power did not change. I got 10% more coins, but dilution/inflation also reduced the purchasing power of my coins by exactly the inverse amount.

* You can replace the above 3 bullet points with ASICs and it's the same. (In general you can replace almost literally any sentence about ASICs with stake and vice versa and it's the same. Except pollution.)
