This was more or less my experience with 4chan, maybe 15-16 years ago, but it took a couple visits.

"What's all this fuss about?"

There was some funny threads "mods are asleep, post sinks" *thread was exclusively photos of cool sinks*. There was threads of pictures of people, post titled "do your worst /b/" *thread was exclusively encouragement and compliments*. And similar posts by group of edgy dudes reveling in subverting expectations of their infamy (especially the term "internet hate machine").

There was a bit gore. Green texts. My first introduction to "doge" ("super shibe", back then). Some of my favourite (now lost to time) memes (like "Halo is a pretty cool guy" variants), other memes, shitposts, and random shit.

And then after 3-4 visits, one of the first posts I saw was started with an explicit photo of what was clearly 2 elementary-school-aged kids. Just mixed in there, with the memes and shitposts. That was the last time I visited 4chan.

Tumblr evwntually did a really good job of distilling down anything worth seeing from 4chan anyway, those of you that didn't visit 4chan weren't missing much.
