Not comparing to a casino I'm merely drawing an analogy to a situation where many would want to "give it a shot" rather than simply reject it from the start.

Nothing consistently plays out the way it did in the past and those who anticipate that it will typically don't do that well. The supposed trends change to overfit the past data, then deviate enough moving forward to be generally useless. Then a new trend is fit to include the deviation, which once again appears significant. Rinse and repeat.

Just look at the plan B nonsense. So many people bought into it - despite how outlandishly ridiculous the implications were - because it looked so good the way he fit it backwards.
