I use the internet to research whatever topics I am looking up on and I can do a much better job than Google's AI in summarizing it. The problem is that this requires real reasoning power to internalize knowledge and discern "good" and "bad" data sources, and current LLMs aren't really knowledge/semantics engines. They just string together words in a probabilistic manner.
This whole thing really shouldn't have happened (using LLM as a knowledge answer engine) and really happened on accident as ChatGPT worked just a little too well for this causing people to misunderstand its actual upper limits, and Google felt threatened in its core business (Google Search) and felt that it had to respond by playing the same game. I really think a CEO with more vision (Sundar Pichai is not one) would have navigated this better.
