A teacher in Sacramento pretty much starts no lower than $60k/yr, minimum. And there's usually lots of ways to increase your step or classification or get bonus pay in other ways.

It's not unusual to start as a substitute, which pays significantly less, but there's been such a serious teaching shortage that I can't imagine anyone who wants to teach full-time would spend a long time subbing.

Progression and benefits tend to be pretty good, too. And compared to the private sector, job security is pretty high. Some states absolutely screw over their teachers, but that's why just squinting at a nationwide average is going to not be very informative. (Elsewhere in CA, an Oakland school district starts its teachers off at about the same pay, which *sucks* for Oakland cost of living, but the pay rises *much* higher with additional years of experience adn professional development courses).
