Yeah, people tend to forget that California has one of the largest conservative populations of any state. It’s just so big that even a minority in California can be a huge number of people and have an outsized influence.

And, like most of the US, by area more of California is conservative than liberal, but due to the concentration of populations more of the population is liberal. That winds up meaning that in most cases more counties are conservative than liberal.

Don’t forget that some of the worst conservatives in Congress came from California: Nunez, McCarthy, etc as well as some be of our worst presidents and the one who is largely responsible for how crappy politics has become, Reagan.
