Seriously though, after years and years hardware hacking and breaking I had to do a sanity check and both Oxford and Websters agree that it does not mean "impossible to recover or fix". It's modern usage began in cellphone modding where bricking is almost exclusively used to describe recoverable conditions. It also refers to companies either taking an action, including inaction, that causes the device to cease functioning as advertised. Just because a tiny amount of people may repurpose it(assuming an even tinier amount is able to restore some or all functions/adds different ones) doesn't mean it isn't bricked for the vast majority of consumers that were sold that device.

They're not doing you a favor by not making the hardware explode. If it was cheaper to do that, every company would be doing so. And if you're too successful in reviving their hardware, they'll sue you for DMCA because you decrypted their IP at some point. You're saying all this assuming a crack is inevitable when that's not the case with the majority of dead hardware.
