Your post made me really curious if the 55 hrs/wk was realistic, because thinking about when schools are in-session for my area I estimated teachers only work 40 hrs/wk for 33 weeks per year (accounting for holidays, not just summer vacation, and assuming some teacher in-service before the school year). I found a BLS report saying that young teachers actually work less than older teachers, with young teachers working about 36 hrs/wk and older teachers working about 43 hrs/wk. Not sure if my 33 week estimate is totally off base, I'm sure it varies per state, but assuming 33 weeks at 40 hrs/wk and $50k per year is an effective $38/hr. Though of course other jobs also get vacation and such despite most people dividing salary by 2080 hrs/yr to come up with hourly pay, but teachers do often get other benefits like pensions that are rare in private industry.
