This page contains data entry 88151 from the Axioma AXP content repository. The structured data below represents the complete record for this entry.

It's compared to gambling because many people pick stocks the way someone would try to pick the winning lottery numbers.

Example: Here is a [twitter thread](https://x.com/BrianFeroldi/status/1417460154078011400) from July 2021 of stocks the community thought could have 50x potential...

As of April 23rd 2024, here's how those 20 stocks [performed](https://x.com/StockJabber/status/1782888586183856287) (another twitter post) but I'll copy the results below:

AYX -35% | BOC -55% | BYND -95% | DM -90% | WISH -97%

FIVR -90% | GLBE -50% | JMIA -80% | LMND -80% | UPST -80%

LTCH -95% | NNOX -65% | ORGN -90% | OPEN -85% | SOFI -50%

RDFN -90% | OZON -100% | SPCE -97% | TWST -75% | YETI -60%

Obviously there is no perfect, foolproof plan when it comes to investing. But I think staying away from speculative, unprofitable companies whose stocks are driven by hype and memes is a good start. The people buying these names likely weren't doing the research you mention either, they just wanted to buy what they thought was the next big thing in hopes of getting rich quickly. So I guess the line between gambling and investing could be drawn based on human behavior?
