Virtually every study presented to Congress about Selective Service, over the last 20+ years, has said that it doesn't make sense: military sees no need to conscript since modern war doesn't require the numbers of untrained bodies it once did; it's redundant of info already collected across multiple agencies/databases; it serves no deterrent yi potential enemies; it doesn't increase volunteers; etc... However, they almost always conclude that we still need it. If this automatic registration proposal is shot down (again), my presumption is Congress really keeps it in place because they're afraid people will stop reporting wages (IRS database) and getting IDs (passports, State Licenses and IDs, somehow not get Social Security numbers issued to children, etc...). It's always about keeping things status quo, instead if efficiency and cost effectiveness
