The device will become effectively useless though - so calling it bricking isn't out of bounds to me.
That said, the problem is inherently there are physical products that depend on online services. Or the depend on online features that simply cost too much to maintain in an up to date, secure and reliable fashion moving forward, so they shut them down or tear those pieces out. I'm not sure I have an answer for that that's fair to both parties (and the 3rd if we think about ewaste)
