The fact that you think their problems are self-inflicted demonstrates your wholesale lack of empathy. Empathy is understanding the feelings and experiences of others from their perspective.

So if a person is born into a poor family in a HCOL city, is that a self-inflicted condition? If a person wasn't taught as a child about money or finance or taught job skills because their parents lacked that knowledge or they were in a poor school district, is that also self-inflicted?

I'd go one step further. Even if it is self-inflicted and someone made mistakes either by career choice or money mistakes, do we condemn those people to a life of misery and poverty? Is that what we want in our society?
