A year would give Ukraine a lot of time to solidify defenses and regroup. They have people who've been in trenches without rotation. People are getting clawed back from overseas to get drafted. Ukraine is not in a good place here. A year of getting hammered by glide bombs and getting nowhere vs a year of relief to rebuild defenses seems like it isn't worth just dismissing.
On the other hand, if we don't care about Ukraine, using them to grind Russia down the whole year is probably a better strategic option for the rest of the west. We are basically fanning the flames of a Soviet civil war, if you wanna put it in the way that will offend the most people at once.
