You realize Poland bought Korean K2s specifically because of how slow Germany has been at modernizing Poland's Leo2s, and the astronomical costs, right? Buying brand new K2s was not only faster (already more K2s than Leo2PLs), it was also somehow cheaper... Buying European made literally no sense from an actual combat capability standpoint...
It's a rare instance of a European military choosing capabilities over domestic jobs, which is a **huge** reason for France's and Germany's military budget size vs actual forces fielded.
Poland (€40B) vs Germany (€70b) for example;
* Poland has 4x the number of modern tanks * Poland has 2x the number of attack helos * Poland has an AWACS, Germany doesn't * Poland has 5x the number of self propelled artillery * Poland has 20x the number of rocket artillery pieces * Same number of 5th Gen fighters * Poland has 33% more air launched cruise missiles * Poland has 3x the number of SEAD/DEAD missiles
Buying European is nice, but not if the cost is so astronomically high and the timelines so delayed that you effectively get nothing. Having 250 tanks on hand means infinitely more for European security than the promise of getting 180 tanks at *some* point.
Need Germany and France to **actually** prioritize European joint projects over domestic jobs. Both will give speeches about it, but the facts are clear.
* European Patrol Corvette program? Germany refused to join so their shipyards can get 100% of work from their own project
* Franco-German tank? Life support because they can't agree on workshare
* Franco-German fighter? Life support because they can't agree on workshare
* European air defense system? Germany bought Israeli and US instead of helping France develop the exo-atmospheric because it's getting jobs from the one, not the other
* Dutch-German heavy frigate? Cancelled because Germany prioritized German jobs to the point the Netherlands dropped out and instead is working with other Scandinavian countries
Both will **GLADLY** toss joint European projects out the window if it means domestic jobs, but will scold others for doing the same thing... Meanwhile Poland's military is **rapidly** modernizing and getting stronger. Which is *actually* better for security??
