Perhaps your friend pays for your coffee, and you decided to compensate them by sending some Bitcoin directly to reimburse them. When they receive the Bitcoin, they would have your public key, which would allow them to see not only how much they sent you, but how much BTC you have in your wallet right now, and they would be able to trace any transaction you have ever made from that wallet.
