In around 2009 Haiti wanted to raise its minimum wage because it is too low for people to feed themselves. But then the US State Department intervened because lots of US corporations have factories in Haiti and don't want to pay those people more, even tho the minimum wage was proposed to be increased by some tiny amount that would barely have any effect on their profits.
Just a couple of phone calls and threats from the US were enough to completely shut down such a small reform. Very sad.
