Most of my stocks are hand picked (like 70-30 by value), because I like the control control and right now it fit's my investment goals and profile. (To be fair it started out more balanced the hand picked portion grew a lot faster, I don't expect this to be the case long term)

The reason that I also tell new investors to look into ETFs is that I had to do a LOT of research to get where I am now. I have received advanced mathematical training that most people here do not. I have access to the research papers and the textbooks on mathematical finance, risk management, portfolio selection, etc, etc that most people have not read and cannot read because of high entry barriers. I trust my abilities to read annual reports and analysts coverage and make informed decisions based on that. However I am still by no measure a professional. I just make good money doing this and I try to share what I have learned for free.

Most retail investors are safer with ETFs because they come investment grade out of the box. They carry less risk and are a good place to start, however if you want to move away from ETFs you can absolutely do that. It just requires a whole lot of reading and you have to be more aware of the risk you are taking on.
