As someone who is doing alright in this economy it can be odd looking in.
There are certain cycles people can fall into pretty easily that are very difficult to get out of.
They can't afford to save because their job does not pay enough, but they can't afford to get a new job because they don't have job mobility, They don't have job mobility because they can't afford to move, and they can't afford to move because they have no savings.
They have no savings so when lose their job they take on debt. That debt makes it impossible to save. They spiral further behind.
They miss payments because they are too far behind, so their credit goes down, so they have to get loans from Buy-Here-Pay-Here meaning they over pay for cars. Now they have even less money.
They have no savings so they can't afford to invest a portion of their savings. So they have no opportunity to take advantage of the super hot market. No assets and liquidity means buying a house is harder, which means their housing costs raise faster. Which means they have less money.
Let's say I have $1. For someone in poverty without access to use the economy to their advantage it feels like $0.25.
They have no money to buy low, or save on interest, or draw money from their home for expenses. They have no money.
