Picking stocks is compared to gambling because of the EMH. I am not saying that EMH is accurate, that's a matter of opinion, but many people, including myself, think it's accurate. EMH says, simplistically, that the PE ratio, cash to debit, etc are all already priced in in the price of the stock. The mathematical expectation of gains from an individual stock compared to the market is zero, just like in gambling (minus the house fee).
