It’s ironic you thought sourcing your answer from GPT was an impressive gotcha when you didn’t notice that GPT didn’t understand my argument.

I never said models have no value. I never said they didn’t capture human-relevant behavioral *patterns*. I simply said you cannot argue from output similarity that anything comparable to human thought is happening under the hood. You can believe in silicon voodoo emergence all you want, but people who are familiar with the mathematics of modeling and optimization would agree with the person you said was “just scared, bro.”

These models are fundamentally incapable of rational thought because they’re not equipped with the capacity to have beliefs, let alone update them by evaluating evidence. They’re very souped up, astronomically-scaled, regressions with random jitter to make the output interesting. Approximating thought will require probabilistic and causal techniques that LLMs do not have and which are in their infancy.
