I think we agree there should be some protections in place for what you are describing, but I think where we might differ is the point of demarcation. I'd say the point where liability should step in is when a company puts content in front of someone that the person didn't select or choose to follow in someway. The protections should last if it is something a user selects to see the content, whereas a "suggested for you" page should have to pass a higher level of scrutiny because that's when a company is making choices for their users.
To take your analogy further a company should not be responsible in that situation for what happens in a parking lot where people select their own spot and are free to come and go. But in a situation where a company takes your car and selects where to put it, and it comes back with a bunch of drugs in the back you might want to take some legal action in civil court against them and I don't think the case would be tossed out before trial even started, but that is what internet companies do now thanks to section 230.
