Instead of arguing red vs blue, why can’t people brainstorm in good faith? I’ll start.
Uploading an ID, whether it’s stored or not, is unnecessarily risky. However, there are no better ways to prove your age. Making users click “I’m 18 or older” doesn’t work, because why wouldn’t a minor lie about that? Also, it’s probably not very legally binding, because minors can’t sign contracts without a parent or guardian.
My idea? Let’s regulate a locally-stored token in operating systems. A simple toggle switch for parents to indicate that the computer/account is used by a minor. Put a parent password on that setting like any other child protections, then put regulation in place that forces adult websites to check that token, and only allow adult devices consume content.
Some, maybe even most, parents won’t use the feature. But if it exists, it’s easy, and it’s effective, then the fault is on the parent if their child is on adult websites.
Will minors find a way around this? Definitely. But to me, it puts a barrier to porn for minors, and it isn’t a security or identity risk for adults.
Any other ideas, rather than whatever this comments section has become?
