There are many different kinds of intelligence; academic, emotional, streetwise etc Best thing you can do is teach them to think for themselves and offer plenty of examples, but even that's difficult and still takes some practice - oh, and your average school (public or private) only ever teaches academic intelligence. The rest don't even get a mention.
Something along the same lines as 'give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and he's fed for life'.
Saving enough cash for a decent education is about the best you can do for them. Beyond that money acts as an inhibitor. They just get lazy.
