I like my dumb idea better than this dumb idea. Combine WA, ID, MT, WY and the Dakotas into a single state:

1) They were all admitted within like 6 months of each other in what was a pretty blatant attempt to screw with the numbers in the Senate. This is why we have ND and SD, they wanted the extra senators. So, yeah, you get 2 not 12. 2) The resulting Wakotadoming would have like 26 electoral votes and actually be quite competitive if you look at the total D vs R vote of all those states
