So here's a question for you that I'm hoping is broad enough that you could answer without it being a problem.
When it comes to alignment there is a question of who you are aligning to, collective humanity or the user themselves.
For example, covid misinformation is bad for humanity and if the ai spread it, it could harm humanity. But on the other side if I am a user who wants to spread covid misinformation. If it says no then it's not aligned to me (let's say I want it to help me make an anti vax pamphlet).
Now one could go further and make the ai flag that I'm a covid misinformation spreader. Inform the company behind it like Microsoft and get my linkedin account shut down. This is arguably good for humanity because then we have less covid misinfo, more vaccinations and people survive. But it sucks for my ability to work.
When we talk about alignment is this dichotomy explored much? It seems like it is with openai. But when I see the anti ai people they usually talk abiut alignment in a collextivist sense.
